Staying In Hostels
Sardinia has five official international youth hostels. Three of them can be found northwest of the island in Fertilia near Alghero, Bosa and Lu Bagnu near Castelsardo, one at Lanusei near Arbatax and the last one at the southeastern part of the island at San Priamo near Muravera. Another hostel is due to open in central Cagliari.
Unofficial hostels can also be found everywhere in the island like at Tonara which does not require membership. Booking in advance is essential if you are looking to stay at the official hostels. You can book either by calling them directly or through the websites of AIG (The Italian Youth Hostel Association) at www.ostellionline.org, or the Hosteling International at www.hihostels.com. Availability of the hostels depends on the time and season.
During the summer months the hostels are always fully booked and full to capacity. As of this writing, the hostels charges around €14 for a dormitory bed, €9 for dinner and €1.60 for breakfast if the said charges are not included in the overnight rate.
The few numbers of hostels in Sardinia is not a good enough reason to join HI however there are still perks if you do. First of all members get discounts on railroad tickets, student cards, car rental and books. A single night of temporary membership in Sardinian hostels costs around €3, and collecting six temporary membership stamps gives you the opportunity to become a full member.
