When You’re Hiking In Sardinia

Keep in mind that Sardinia is still largely a rural area. The main source of employment for most of the population is agriculture.

Don’t be fooled by appearances. Even though the landscape appears picturesque, life for most of the people living there is hard. So, the people here as well as their land should be respected.

Leave gates the way you found them. Most of Sardinia has been owned by farmers, so be respectful when you are in someone else’s property. When you meet the local people, always be friendly and polite. They will reward you accordingly.

One very important rule is never take anything from the fields or the gardens. Never pick grapes or other fruits. The fruits and vegetables can be bought at a very cheap price at the local markets or from the farmers themselves.

While exploring the wilderness, walk in a quiet manner. No boisterous laughter or any disruptive behavior that might attention to you.

Help protect the wildlife. Sardinia has been blessed with unique wildlife. The government and the people took great pains to maintain the natural balance of things. As such, you can’t scare or harm any animal that you see, nor entrap them and make them as food or as pets.

And most of all, take your litter with you and dispose them properly.
