My Sardinia

Sardinia is one of the safest places in Italy. But while there is a very low crime rate on the island, there are inevitably some instances of drunkenness which can lead to petty crimes like theft. Instances of misdemeanors, like indiscriminate firing of guns, are borne more out of boredom rather than anger. What does occur as violence and disruption in the community can be traced to family arguments, which always remain confined to the concerned parties.

The stereotypical bandits are quite rare, as are the crimes of kidnapping that are frequently attributed to former sheep rustlers out to make a quick fortune from extracting ransom money. This should not trouble tourists at all because locals are usually polite and tend to prefer to keep to their business.

As can be expected, drug addiction and juvenile crimes are more common in the large cities like Cagliari and Sassari. To steer clear of the muggers and pickpockets, a visitor needs only to use his common sense. Always be discreet with your money and your jewelry, and never show off anything you would hate to lose to a criminal. Take a hint from the locals and keep your bags close (better if it’s slung across your body) and keep your camera firmly in your grip. Never carry your whole travel money when you venture out, and entrust your valuables to the hotel manager if needed. Do not walk on deserted or poorly lit streets. In the rare occurrence that you do become accosted by a robber, do not panic and submit meekly. Doing otherwise might provoke the criminal and lead to more violence.

Bear in mind that these occur rarely in Sardinia and should not get in the way of a memorable experience on the island.
