The Joys Of Alghero Dining

Italy has a great sense of fine dining, and Sardinia is no different. Despite being positioned along the Mediterranean, barely within the borders of Italy, Sardinia has a variety of dishes and menus that will satisfy the urge of even the hungriest people. The island thrives in its selection of seafood dishes, aside from the usual pasta servings that Italy has been known for all around the world.

The bevy of food choices in Sardinia compliments the beautiful natural spectacles of the island that make a great view from afar. Therefore, instead of tourists simply enjoying the sights and sounds of Sardinia, they should make an effort to at least taste the greatest food Italy has to serve in the best establishments in the island.

Let’s start with the more affordable restaurants in Sardinia. Trattoria La Singular started out as a wine cellar, but was eventually turned into a convenient establishment that serves local specialties. Among the favorites are the cordula di luna (sheep innards that have been rolled), bouvel (snails of the large variety) and of course, the manja en branc, an Alghero dessert cake made of sugar and egg yolk. The restaurant is known to be open during the summer, but the same cannot be said during the winters. Nevertheless, Trattoria La Singular is a great place to learn more about Sardinian cuisine at reasonable prices.

For those in the mood for a drink or two, look no further than Café Latino. The bar is no different than any other bar in Alghero, save for the magnificent view of the town and its nostalgic splendor. While sitting at one of the outdoor tables of the bar and enjoying the pristine sights, it is best to order the Sardinian wines, which is described as distinctly rough and heavy by many. Two of the more popular wines of the island are Cannonau, made primarily of Cannonau grape for the full-bodied goodness, and the Vermentino, a grape wine that strangely taste well with seafood.

Ristorante La Lepanto is arguably the classiest among the restaurants in Sardinia, and with good reason. For one, the establishment only accepts credit cards for payment of the food. Another, the owner of the establishment is Moreno Cecchini who originally came from Lucca but has become the ambassador of food in the town, which means that people can expect only the best Sardinian dishes to pass through their kitchen door. The theme of the restaurant is seafood and it clearly shows in the menu with the 350 gram single serving of lobster being the bestseller. Seafood also makes their way as ingredients to other dishes of the restaurant such as the spaghetti all’algherese, which is made with green olives and clams. Aside from the dishes, the impeccable service is quick to respond to orders while customers are also treated to a fine list of full-bodied wines to compliment the seafood dishes.

There is nothing more that needs to be said about the culinary wonders of Alghero expect that people should taste the dishes! The seafood is extraordinary, the pasta al dente, and the whole experience of being in Sardinia is increased with every bite.
