While the rest of the world feasts, Sardinians actually fast as Christmas draws near. They deprive themselves of food from the sunset of the 23rd of December until the sunset of the 2th. The feast only begins afterwards, as the great Yule Log is kindled and all the songs and prayers are done. This sacred ritual is performed around the Presepio, the crib where the feast begins.

We thought the attitude of the man in the following incident most unusual: When motoring along one of the straight roads down through the valley to Cagliari, we saw a man ahead on horseback. He jumped off in a great hurry and, holding the horse by the end of the reins, got down into the deep ditch at the side of the road.

The Mamuthones and the Issohadores are the mysterious masked characters in the carnival of Mamoiada. The carnival celebrates the ritual od The masks are carved entirely from wood and are specifically made for the occasion by expert craftsmen. The mask of the Mamuthone, also known as Bisera, is painted black and comes exclusively from the bark of a wild pear tree. The Issohadores are from the alder tree and is painted white. The interpretations of this ritual are complex. The dance of the procession dancers is a ritual influenced by local agricultural myths. The dance is supposed to symbolize the reawakening of Nature in spring. It also has historical meaning.

Among these are orchids, narcissus, lilies, gladiolas, irises, cyclamen, fox-gloves, poppies, and sweet peas. In the summer months, usually from May until September, there is no rainfall. The Romans captured it in 238 B. C., and it was then noted for its supply of corn. The Romans built many towns and roads, and remains of their monuments, temples, and sepulchers are still preserved.

Sardinia is a country steeped in tradition. Tradition that is still strong and well-preserved. An excellent indication of how tradition is passed from one generation to the next is through its food. More specifically with its beautifully rendered ornamental breads. In this short film, the women of Orgosolo demonstrate how they create these culinary wonders from scratch. The cooking of the bread dough, still with an eye towards the olden days, is done on a firewood oven.
