They deprive themselves of food from the sunset of the 23rd of December until the sunset of the 2th. The feast only begins afterwards, as the great Yule Log is kindled and all the songs and prayers are done. This sacred ritual is performed around the Presepio, the crib where the feast begins.

In Sardinia, there is a time for everything, especially the tourist sites. The famous churches of Sardinia, meaning those that have become must-see tourist stops, such as the Pisan churches of Santa Trinita di Saccargia near Sassari and the one in San Gavino in Porto Torres, are open all day and every day. The other churches observe the usual hours - meaning, they open at around 7 or 8 a.m. for the morning mass, and then close at around noon. You can visit again for the afternoon mass at 4 or 5 p.m., and until they close at 7 p.m. The more obscure and smaller churches open only for the early morning and evening masses, while the even smaller ones are open only on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

Trekking through the wild, seldom-visited trails in Sardinia reveals some of the best long-distance hikes in the Mediterranean. The best hikes are south of the Cala Gonone. Here, the hiking trails wind inland, tracing the ridge of the Flumineddu River, flanked on the other side by the Sopramonte massif. Hikes along this trail wind through uninhabited lands, but following the road leads travelers to the unmatched sight of a majestic mountain landscape.

It is an open secret among surfing aficionados that the best place to surf in Italy is on Sardinia. Most consider it a surfers' paradise. Because of the usually isolated location, surfers can have the beach all to themselves. As if the beautiful dark green waters aren't a draw enough, the golden beaches can be a private place where they can discover and enjoy the sturdy waves. Surfers trek to the Cagliari coastline where there are more than twenty five surfing sites they can choose from. The best time to go here is during winter time where the swells can go up to five storeys high! Nothing like a surfing beast for a surfer to tame.
